The Ausangate trek is definitely an adventure trip recommended for those who like hiking, feeling nature, the spirit of the mountains, the energy of Mother Earth. The Ausangate route offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in Cusco, with varied wildlife, glaciers and Andean lagoons.

Ausangate Trek is also one of the most difficult hikes in the region. The most important thing about this trip is that you’ll get to see the real PERU, the Andes and its people in their traditional dress, their customs that persist till today.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Ausangate is the fifth highest mountain in Peru; its maximum altitude is 6,372 meters.
The hike up the mountain of Ausangate is considered adventure tourism. The road presents rock formations at a height of over 5000 meters covered by ice tongues.
The waters of the snowmelt flowing westward give origin to the Vilcanota River, which subsequently flows into the Amazon River and ends up in the Atlantic Ocean.
Its eastern slopes feed several small rivers that culminate in the Inambari River and to the south it drains its waters into Titicaca Lake with the river Azángaro.
The temperature in the day is between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius and at night it drops to 4-10 degrees Celsius in June and July.

Brief Itinerary

- DAY 1: CUSCO - TINQUI – UPIS
- DAY 2: UPIS - LAGOON AUSANGATE Q'OCHA
- DAY 3: LAGOON AUSANGATE QOCHA - QAMPA
- DAY 4: Q'AMPA - PACCHANTA
- DAY 5: PACCHANTA - CUSCO

DIA 1 : CUSCO - TINQUI – UPIS.

This first day we’ll leave Cusco very early for our three-hour trip in a private vehicle to the small village of Tinqui (3,800 meters). We will go by beautiful landscapes and several traditional villages as Urcos, Cattca and Ocangate. In Tinqui we will have lunch, after lunch we begin to walk through beautiful mountain landscapes with great views of Mount Ausangate. We walk for an average of 4 hours to reach the hot springs in Upis (4400 meters). In this place we will have dinner and spend the night.

DAY 2: UPIS - LAGOON AUSANGATE Q'OCHA.

After breakfast, we head to the first pass called the Abra Arapa (4850 meters). After passing the Abra we will have lunch, after a break we’ll begin to descend the valleys, through the green lagoon Puqa Q'ocha down to the turquoise waters of Jatun Puqa Q'ocha. After this point, we’ll climb to the second pass of Apuchata (4,900 meters), overlooking the stunning lagoon Ausangate Q'ocha and its bluish turquoise waters. Here it will be our second camp.

DAY 3: LAGOON AUSANGATE QOCHA - QAMPA

After breakfast, we depart for the Abra Palomani (5200 meters), the highest point of the trek. After getting across the pass, we’ll descend to the point where we will have a break and have lunch. After lunch we will continue our trek enjoying the views of the snowy mountains Tres Picos and Punta Puca. We’ll go past the broad the green valley of Pampa Jutunpata till reaching Q'ampa, where we’ll spend the night.

DAY 4: Q'AMPA - PACCHANTA.

After breakfast, we will go through the small community of Q'ampa from here we’ll ascend to the Abra Q'ampa (5,000 meters). From here we can see several open lagoons of different colors, descend to the lagoon Q'oma Q'ocha where we will have lunch. Then we head to the small town of Pacchanta. Here we can enjoy the hot springs and even take a well-deserved beer, we’ll set up a camp near Pacchanta and will have the afternoon free to explore this interesting Andean village. ( If you want to have the option of staying in a basic hostel tonight).

DAY 5: PACCHANTA - CUSCO

After breakfast, we will have three hours to walk back to Tinqui, where we will have time to explore this traditional Andean village before taking private transportation back to Cusco, arrive in Cusco at approximately 6:00 pm.

Personal tents: 2 people in each 4-people-capacity tent, to allow for higher comfort and a safe keeping of backpacks.

Pack animals (to carry tents, food and cooking equipment) – days 1 to 5

Meals (04B, 04L, 04D + daily morning snack + daily tea service except last day). Vegetarian or special menus are available upon request at no extra cost
Filtered boiled water from lunch time on 1st day onwards
Bio-degradable personal hand soaps
Bio-degradable dishwashing detergents used by our kitchen staff
Others: hot water every morning and evening for washing purposes / boiled water to fill in your water bottle every morning and night, and at lunch time if requested with enough time ahead
First-aid kit including emergency oxygen bottle.
Private transport from Tinki to Cusco, including transfer to your hotel in Cusco
